  When we think of giving back, it can become incredibly overwhelming! Not only are we all feeling short on time with a growing list of expenses and obligations during the holiday season, we want to make sure we’re dedicating our giving in a meaningful way. 

Here’s our list of local ways to give back to our community. 

Angela’s House

Angela’s House is a 501 C3 non-profit organization that assists families caring for children with special health care needs that are medically fragile, chronically ill or living with a life threatening illness.

Donating: If you select the donate section of their page there are different ways to donate, including via check, in the name of someone special, planned gifts and more.

Branches Long Island helps those in need with no judgments. They work side by side with many social workers and homeless shelters on Long Island offering a variety of services. As of May 2020 they opened their first location in Middle Island, NY and plan to offer classes and counseling along with their weekly blessing boxes which provides necessities to the families in crisis on Long Island.

Donating: You can donate to their Holiday Wish Donation Drive with an unopened toy, donate non-perishables, a monetary donation or more by checking out the donate page on their site.

Brighter Tomorrows, Inc

Brighter Tomorrows is committed to listening, believing & helping victims of domestic violence. Founded in 1986, Brighter Tomorrows, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) human service agency dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence. The agency serves victims from Suffolk and Nassau counties as well as New York City and the Tri-State area. We provide shelter, counseling and legal advocacy.

Carroll’s Kitchen

Carroll’s Kitchen is a grassroots non-profit 501(c)(3) charity. Ryan Carroll is a Sayville, New York local and the CEO and Founder. He lost his job as a chef in NYC due the closures of restaurants from Covid-19. Instead of staying home and quarantining he decided to assemble a team of over thirty of the best hospitality workers to help people across Long Island in a safe and organized manner. The team at Carroll’s Kitchen have fed over 40,000 people in need since March, 2020. From front line workers, veterans, the elderly, children, police departments, fire departments, and shelters. Carroll’s Kitchen was born out of a passion for helping others through community, culinary and caring. Ryan and his team are now focused on feeding families in high-risk low income areas of Long Island, frontline workers, and the elderly who were hit the hardest from Covid-19. Carroll’s Kitchens mission is to battle food insecurity across Long Island.

Friends of Karen

Every child with a life-threatening illness, and his or her family, will have all that they need to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. Their mission is to provide emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a life-threatening illness and their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning, and able to cope. We started in 1978 with one family; one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen. Since then, we have assisted more than 17,000 children and their families.

Donating: There are many ways to contribute to Friends of Karens mission. You can donate gift cards for their Holiday Gift Card Program, send a gift to a child through their Adopt a Family program, contribute food or leave a monetary donation.

L.I. Against Domestic Violence provides a range of services that help over 14,000 Long Island adults and children each year to escape from abusive relationships and build new lives. Founded in 1976, we are a regional pioneer and leader in empowering victims and survivors, providing them with shelter and support, and working with law enforcement and the community to prevent abuse.

Our goals are to improve food security for families, sponsor programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educate the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. PMYCS is a non profit organization serving the Patchogue-Medford community since1982. Their mission is to enhance the quality of lives of the families in their communities through outreach, education, recreation, counseling and support services. 

Donating: This Holiday season they will be hosting a Toy drive. There are many other ways to participate including monetary donations and food donations.

The Chestene M. Coverdale Food Pantry, Inc. (Sayville Food Pantry) provides food, information, referral and support services to individuals and families in need in the community. Food donations are always needed and welcomed.

Donating: With the increase in prices of gasoline and food they are experiencing a rise in their numbers of recipients. They accept all non-perishable and frozen unprepared foods. They are also asking for gasoline gift cards as we service many working poor. With the approach of Christmas any store gift card would be greatly appreciated as well.

Starfish Swap

At Starfish Swap, we partner with Long Island schools, churches, and community organizations to provide students of families in need with clothing and accessories for school. We offer stylized clothing packages with new and recycled clothing, shoes, and accessories to students at no cost. The package’s apparel and accessories are gathered from participating schools, churches, community members, and local merchants and recycled back to the greater communities to benefit school age children from local families. This help keeps good clothing out of the landfills, and find new homes. 

Donating: This organization welcomes new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories for children ages 5 through 18.
